The Loudoun Department of Economic Development and Loudoun County Public Schools Nutrition Services are excited to announce the launch of the 2024 Farmer Trading Card program. This collaborative initiative celebrates the rich tapestry of farms in Loudoun County while providing an engaging educational opportunity for children to learn more about where their food comes from.
The Farmer Trading Card program aims to connect elementary school children in Loudoun County with local farmers and promote an understanding of the importance of supporting local agriculture. Through these trading cards, young learners will get a glimpse into the daily lives of farmers, the diverse crops they grow, and the vital role they play in sustaining our community.
In addition to collecting trading cards, children will have the opportunity to meet the farmers featured in this year's collection at a special event. The Loudoun Made, Loudoun Grown Theme Night will take place at a Loudoun United game on Friday, May 10. During halftime, the featured farmers will be honored on the field and will be available to sign autographs, allowing children and their families to interact with the individuals who grow their food.
Get ready for a journey through Western Loudoun as the annual Loudoun Spring Farm Tour springs to life on May 18 and 19. With nearly 40 farms opening their gates to the public, this two-day event offers a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in rural life. From rolling pastures home to farm animals, livestock, and equines to colorful fields of flowers, produce, and plants, visitors will experience agricultural life in the region, engaging with farmers and artisans along the way. Whether it's petting adorable farm animals, sampling artisanal cheeses, or learning about farm operations, the Loudoun Spring Farm Tour promises unforgettable experiences for all ages.
In February, farmers market managers from Loudoun participated in a workshop and networking event to discuss and collaborate on the future of their enterprises. Led by Kim Bryden and Kelly Guglielmino of Cureate, a woman-owned and operated food-tech and business development consulting firm that focuses on building local/regional food and beverage supply systems, the cohort marked a significant milestone in the ongoing journey of understanding and improving local farmers markets.
As spring begins to blossom and the sun warms the fertile lands of Western Loudoun, a cherished tradition unfolds once again: the opening of Loudoun’s farmers markets! From family-owned farms that cultivate an array of produce, proteins, and artisanal goods, to vineyards that produce award-winning wines, the county's agricultural tapestry is rich, varied, and ready to be harvested.
On April 21, Loudoun County Animal Services will discuss emergency preparedness for livestock owners. Their Humane Law Enforcement officers will go over steps you can take to be ready for anything from minor issues trailering and around the farm, to storms, fires and other emergency situations. Learn about the Technical Large Animal Rescue program, Operation Protect Livestock and other county programs that can help you keep your livestock safe. There is no cost to attend this program.
